Ellen Angeles
State Board of Education, CD 3 Representative
I have spent over 20 years in education, including teaching in Leadville, Durango, and Montrose. With a child currently in our local school district, I understand education as both an educator and a parent.
I believe students should be taught how to think, not what to think. I will work to establish media literacy programs in every school so students can learn to distinguish facts from falsehoods and reality from conspiracy theories.
I believe no group of parents or school boards should dictate what students can read outside the classroom. I will advocate for legislation to prevent the banning of books in school libraries.
I will work to fund music and art as a regular part of a student’s week. The creative arts can turn around a student’s life and supercharge their love of learning. Creativity also improves proficiency in science, math, and language arts.
I will collaborate with community organizations to provide families with materials to help their preschoolers develop vocabulary, creativity, reading and problem-solving.
I will advocate for better pay and expanded training for school counselors.
