Upcoming County Candidate Openings

The following county-level positions will be up for election in November 2026:

  • The County Commissioner for District 1 represents Carbondale and part of Glenwood Springs. (Election Boundaries Map) The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) oversees county policies, budgets, and programs to ensure the well-being of residents. Commissioners make decisions on land use, infrastructure, public services, and community development.  Garfield County BOCC manages an annual budget of over $100 million. Tom Jankowsky currently serves as County Commissioner for District 1.

  • The County Clerk manages public records, vital records (such as birth and marriage certificates), and oversees elections within the county. This office ensures fair and accurate electoral processes and handles vehicle registrations, licensing, and other administrative duties.

  • The County Treasurer is responsible for managing county funds, including collecting property taxes, distributing funds to various governmental entities, and ensuring efficient financial operations. This office is crucial for maintaining the county’s fiscal health.

  • The County Assessor determines the value of properties within the county for taxation purposes. This office plays a critical role in ensuring fair property tax assessments and provides property data to the public and government agencies.

  • The County Surveyor provides expertise on land boundaries and mapping. This office helps ensure accurate land surveys for property development, infrastructure projects, and public records, maintaining the integrity of the county’s geographical data.

  • The County Coroner investigates deaths within the county, particularly those that are sudden, unexplained, or involve legal investigations. This office works to determine causes of death and collaborates with law enforcement and medical personnel.

  • The County Sheriff is the top law enforcement officer in the county, overseeing public safety, law enforcement, and the county jail. This office is responsible for responding to emergencies, investigating crimes, and ensuring the safety of residents.

Providing Public Comments at County Commissioner Meetings

The Garfield County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) typically meets the first three Mondays of each month. (In the case of holidays, the following Tuesday or the fourth Monday of the month also serve as alternate meeting dates.)

BOCC meetings typically begin at 8 am. Most meetings are held in Room 100 in the Garfield County Administration Building, 108 8th Street, Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Board meetings begin with allocated time for members of the public to share comments about any item not on the agenda.

Public Comment time is also offered at the beginning of the afternoon session beginning at 1 p.m.

To attend the meeting via Zoom, you must register ahead of time.

Go to Garfield County Website / Meetings and click on "view meeting or present."

On the day of the meeting, once you’ve logged into the meeting, click on “Raise your hand.” When it’s your turn to speak, your name will be called, and you will be unmuted.
